Steve Fairbanks, Councilmember, Sandy City and ULCT 2nd VP
Steve Fairbanks made his first foray into politics in 2003 when, after much encouragement from friends and acquaintances, he decided to run for Sandy City Council. His slogan was "Vote for the Man Without a Plan" because he had no grievance, complaint, or personal agenda. Steve’s pledge was to make his vote on each question based on the facts and not the emotions involved. Steve has a long history of public service in Sandy touching many aspects of city life. He has worked with business and community leaders in various settings and capacities and has seen first-hand how the city and the community can work together. Steve was recenly appointed as the 2nd Vice President of the Leauge, which means in two years he'll be the boss man.
1. How long have you been serving as an elected official in your community and is this your first stab at city government? I am finishing my first 4 year term. I had previously served on the Public Utilities Advisory Board and a number of community organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce Board, Rotary Club board, etc.
2. What made you want to run for public office? Constant prodding by people I thought liked me.
3. Name one thing (and no doubt there are many) about being about being a municipal official in your community that is really satisfying, and one thing that is, shall we say, not the least bit enjoyable. I have enjoyed being on the inside of issues and seeing all the information needed to make decisions. I really don't enjoy how angry really good people get when they believe things that aren't true.
4. Where you’re not acting in your capacity as a municipal official, how do you spend your spare time? I am a real estate broker
5. What is the greatest challenge facing your community? Ageing infrastructure, but we are working hard to stay on top of it.
6. CD in your player? Manhatten Transfer
7. Book on your nightstand? 1776
8. Radio station set on your dial? FM 100
9. Political idol? Mayor Dolan
10. Presidential candidate in ’08? Undecided
